07 Oct The “Always Full” Empty Bowl
No one has ever become poor by giving. ~ Anne Frank
True wealth is not measured by what we keep, but by what we share. Generosity opens the Heart, dissolves fear, and creates a flow of kindness that returns in unexpected ways. In Buddhism, giving (dāna) is the first perfection because it enriches both the giver and the receiver. A generous person discovers peace, joy, and goodwill—treasures far greater than anything material.
Listen to this Buddhist story…
In a small village lived an old woman named Mira. She owned almost nothing—just a tiny hut, a worn robe, and a simple clay bowl for rice. Yet she was known as the most generous person in the village.
Every morning, she filled her bowl with half of the little rice she had and shared it with anyone hungry—travelers, beggars, and even stray animals.
One day a young monk asked her, “Grandmother, you have so little. Why do you give so much?”
Mira smiled softly. “My child, this bowl may look empty, but when I give, it feels as if the whole world fills it again.”
The young monk was puzzled. “How can giving make your bowl feel full?”
She placed the bowl in his hands and said, “When you give with a pure heart, you never lose anything. Your kindness returns as peace, blessings, and Love. What I give feeds others, but what I feel feeds my Soul.”
That night, as the young monk sat in meditation, he realized her truth: A generous Heart is a treasure that never empties.
There seems to be no greater resistance in many people today than the idea of becoming generous. ~ Siraj
The Radical Fear of Generosity
No word strikes more terror into the hearts of the conventional mindset than generosity—closely followed by death. For many, the two words are synonymous. Most people equate generosity with foolishness and eventual impoverishment. If we define generosity through the lens of our survivalist programming, we find ourselves trapped in a perpetual quandary over amounts, wondering to whom and when we should perform these dubious acts of liberal insanity.
For generations rapidly aging into obsolescence, there is truly nothing to look forward to but the foreboding future of rotting in a physical body that is dying from the prideful assumptions that ultimately become its own mortification.
It takes a fortitude of consciousness to live authentically—where the Spirit of our being, our Soul, is our primary priority. ~ Siraj
The Illusion of Righteous Struggle
Many people protest the violence of war while remaining entirely unaware that they are the war. They respond self-righteously to their own impulse for self-preservation, which is the hidden motive behind their protests. The strife of the world lives within all of us, visible in our resistance to achieving the consciousness of love through authentic spiritual practice. Protesting changes nothing in this world. The real war exists within us.
Another example of this: I have students who are actually proud of being “cheap.” They tell me this miserly mentality—inherited from their parents—is admirable, respected by their lineage, and validated by the logic of the masses. Yet, I have never met a person claiming to be a “student of the Way” who was not fundamentally greedy, making them utterly indifferent to self-examination. Consequently, awakening to a higher consciousness becomes impossible. These individuals merely go through the motions of an assumed practice; nothing of the Way ever penetrates their egos. In this state, they would never dare to discover, let alone open themselves to, the treasures of love through generosity.
There are severe consequences for this miserly disposition. Such people never change; they remain stupefied by their refusal to understand what it means to be generous. You see, my dear reader, the reason nothing I present to you ever manifests as true understanding is because you are simply not generous, nor are you interested in authentic generosity.
It is only through a generous Heart that the true gravitas of conscious living can be realized. ~ Siraj
Consciousness—the very essence of awakening—is only possible through the state of generosity. Therefore, we must become so mercifully generous that insights can finally pierce the typical intellectual and emotional bounds of “sensibility.”
The Power of Silence and the Ultimate Question
To merely believe we comprehend an insight via our intellect is absolute foolishness. Consciousness is derived through silence. Silence is attained through a merciful state of being where we are willing to drop the confines of our conditioned assumptions.
Allow me to offer an example through an unguarded insight of true generosity. Notice how this statement hits you, how your logic and reasoning immediately dismiss it as foolishness:
WOULD YOU GIVE ME THAT WHICH YOU DEEM THAT YOU NEED MORE THAN I DO?
Of course NOT.
I am sure you assume this statement is about money. It could be. But for me, it is about the state of mercy that overcomes the deficient mindset of “reality” and “righteousness,” which actively inhibits awakening.
This statement is an exercise in irony that few possess the consciousness to appreciate, much less understand. There are elements of the Way that one must simply “get.” If you don’t, then the question remains utterly meaningless—insignificant to the very manner of your life and your living.
Our fate and destiny are based in the degree of our generosity. ~ Siraj
Living unaware of this basic principle of Life is one of the purposes for our incarnation into this world. Seems that most people have to take the hard road, the road most taken in this world by Sapiens who wish to remain removed from Life itself. For the average pedestrian mentality, life is merely about “gain and loss.”
Examine Your Frugality: Look at where you hoard resources, time, or emotional energy - recognize how your self-preservation masquerades as practical caution.
Yield Entirely to Giving: Give not out of surplus, but to build the fortitude needed to transcend your conditioned beliefs about existence.
Every Encounter is a Divine Rendezvous: When you recognize this, a profound virtue takes root, aligning you with an entirely new principle of living.
Let Goodness Precede Every Gesture: This foundational mercy transforms mere existence into true Life itself, guiding you across all your incarnations throughout the universe.
Do Not Make Human Understanding the Catalyst for Your Living: You must transcend intellectual limits in order to allow true consciousness to lead the Way.
