The Mirror of Our Deeds

The Mirror of Our Deeds

Each day of my life I am sowing seeds that one day I will harvest. ~ Gautama Buddha

After many days of travel, Buddha arrived at a small town to give a speech. Everyone was happy to see him, except one young man.

While Buddha spoke, the man was shouting at him. Buddha did not pay attention and continued speaking. This infuriated the man even more. He walked directly in front of Buddha and continued to ridicule him. “You have no right to teach others. You are stupid, and you are a fake!”

The crowd began to react to this young man’s caustic behavior. Buddha stopped the crowd from turning against him and said, “It is not always necessary to counter aggression by aggression.”

Instead, he turned to the man and asked, “If you buy a gift for someone and that person does not take it, to whom does the gift belong?”

he young man was surprised by the question, thought for a moment and answered, “It would belong to me because I bought the gift.”

The Buddha said, “Correct. It is the same with your anger. If you become angry with me and I don’t feel insulted nor accept your hostility, the anger falls back on you, as it was initially yours to give. You are then the only one who becomes unhappy, not me. All you’ve done is hurt yourself.”

The young man understood, clasped his hands together and slowly bowed to the Buddha. It was an acknowledgement that this man learned a valuable lesson that day.

And so, the Buddha concluded, “As a mirror reflects an object, as a still lake reflects the sky, take care that what you speak or act is for good. For goodness will always cast back goodness and harm will always cast back harm.”

No matter what we choose to believe, our thoughts, words, actions, and reactions carry inescapable consequences. Every moment of daily living shapes not only our current life, but manifests our destiny in the worlds to come.

We are actively designing our next life right now. ~ Siraj

Everything matters. Yet few of us realize the consequences we bring upon ourselves through mental, emotional, and physical cruelty—often sinking into the worst parts of our genetic nature. We refuse to connect the dots of our actions, preferring to act out of spiritual indifference and self-contained fear while falsely believing we are acting in our best interests.

We think we can act without consequence, and because we fail to cultivate an inner spiritual environment, we set destructive patterns into motion. Even reading this casually, wondering if it applies to you, sets consequences into motion for every moment that follows.

A lifetime is built from many elements, beginning with perception. ~ Siraj

How we view things and assign them meaning is rooted in our ancient genetic nature, alongside the fears we revere throughout our lives. Acting and reacting from this genetic conditioning sets the Law of Cause and Effect into motion. We live the exact consequences of our own choices.

Eventually, all subtle choices become overt. We all come to that pivotal place where we must face the consequences of our state of mind—a powerful moment that serves as a mirror for our true intent.

At a certain point in this lifetime, we all sit at the table of consequence. ~ Siraj

This is not about self-punishment, but about realizing where we have strayed from our Hearts. As Dogen Zenji noted, when we discover that the truth is already within us, we are all at once our original selves.

It is only in the Heart that we find healing. Healing means coming to terms with Love, allowing it to live through us via compassion and conscious awareness. In mercy, we find the ultimate antidote to all of our mischief.

Whatever is happening right now, embrace it with your entire being. ~ Siraj

Feel the vast immensity of life and just how beautiful it truly is, living in humble gratitude for each moment rather than squandering your existence on petty pride, foolishness, and greed.

Always remember the reality of death, for everything passes. Do not die in regret, which only traps you in the same futile cycles, forcing you to repeat your life over and over again.

Liberate yourself in Love. ~ Siraj

Own your daily impact: Recognize that every thought, word, and action shapes your present reality and designs your future destiny.

Examine your automatic reactions: Pause before acting out of primal fear, genetics, or spiritual indifference so you avoid harmful choices.

Connect the dots of cause and effect: Understand that your current life conditions stem directly from past choices rather than random chance.

Face the table of consequence consciously: When you must confront the results of your state of mind, view it as an opportunity to find your true intent rather than an act of self-punishment.

Heal through the Heart: Anchor your life in mercy, compassion, and conscious living as the ultimate antidote to human mischief.
